Grand Velas Riviera Maya: Everything You Need to Know

My stay at Grand Velas Riviera Maya was woven into a larger wellness event called the Wellnessing Getaway, which included several days of Pilates, sculpt classes, cycling, meditation, sound baths, and the occasional cold plunge that I surprisingly didn’t hate. Between the wellness sessions, I had four full days to explore the property, and I came away impressed with this all-inclusive property that challenges the many negative stereotypes out there.

I was lucky to experience this resort with a fantastic group of travel advisors, all hosted by UJV, a trusted and valuable supplier

This resort is a no-brainer for families that want to get to a resort and chill, group trips that don’t want to worry about constantly splitting checks, and multi-generational trips that don’t need the looming final bill hanging over the trip like a specter. The beauty of an all-inclusive is that you know the full investment upfront, and if you’re in a beautiful place with great service, all you need to do is enjoy. The only extras you’ll pay for are spa treatments, the wine pairings at their multi-course Michelin restaurant, and select fitness and wellness classes.

Here's the full breakdown.

The Lay of the Land

Grand Velas is divided into three distinct areas, and understanding the difference is important before you book.

Grand Class is adults-only (16+) with ocean views and the added bonus of a plunge pool on your balcony. If you're coming for a couples' escape or a girls' trip, this is your zone.

Ambassador is the family-friendly wing. There are ocean views, adjoining rooms, and proximity to the resort's enormous main pool. This is where the energy is. It’s also close to the kids and teens clubs, which are covered below.

Zen is set farther from the beach, tucked into lush surroundings with jungle views. Don't let "no beachfront" deter you. The pool in this section was my favorite – it’s stunning - and the tradeoff is total serenity. Zen is a great fit for families who want a calmer atmosphere, couples who want easy spa access (it's right there), or solo travelers who come to actually decompress.

The Rooms

Whatever section you choose, the rooms are legitimately massive studio suites with equally generous balconies. Grand Class adds the plunge pool. Ambassador and Grand Class face the ocean; if you're an early riser, the sunrises are worth setting an alarm for. Zen suites look out over the jungle and deliver on their promise of peace and quiet.

The bathrooms deserve their own mention. Molton Brown products, the coziest robes, dual sinks, a jetted soaking tub, a separate shower, and an enclosed water closet. No one will be elbowing anyone out of the way.

One detail I loved is that upon arrival, your suite butler connects with you via WhatsApp to ensure easy communication during your stay. If you want to adjust a dinner reservation, make a spa appointment, request housekeeping, or just have a question, the butler is there to assist at a moment’s notice. I loved this feature.

My butler was among the most responsive and timely I’ve ever experienced in a hotel - loved being able to communicate with them so easily.

The Food

Grand Velas's culinary program is one of its crown jewels, and it absolutely earns that reputation. All-inclusives have a well-known reputation for mediocre food, and Grand Velas is not having it.

The headliner is Cocina de Autor, a Michelin-starred tasting menu experience with nine courses of creative, beautifully presented dishes that are as photogenic as they are delicious.

Beyond that, the resort offers Lucca (upscale Italian), Sen Lin (Asian fusion), Piaf (French), and Frida (contemporary Mexican). The breakfast buffet at Azul is well done, and I absolutely stalked the little carnitas pancakes I’d had on day one. I went back daily trying to find them again to no avail. My one disappointment of the trip!

Bonus points to Grand Velas for allowing dinner reservations to be made in advance. No need to figure it out onsite.

Family Amenities (This Is Where Grand Velas Really Shines)

If you are traveling with children, especially very young children, Grand Velas goes above and beyond in a way that most resorts simply don't.

Their Baby Concierge is remarkable. Need a stroller? A high chair? Brand new bottles with a bottle brush? A crib? Pack n’ Play? Bath toys? Done. They also set up in-room "camping tents" for little ones, which is the kind of detail that genuinely delights kids. Family suites can accommodate up to eight guests so large families can relax and spread out.

The kids club (ages 4–12) is the rare variety that children actually want to go to. It's thoughtfully designed, energetic, and staffed by people who genuinely seem to love their jobs. Younger children may attend with an accompanying adult. We had the chance to observe some of the kids in action, and they were absolutely loving life.

The most inviting and adorable space at the kids club

The teen club is equally well done and it’s honestly entertaining for the whole family: old-school games like Battleship and air hockey sit alongside Pop-a-Shot, various gaming consoles, and a golf simulator (!!). The whole family is welcome until 9 pm, at which point it becomes a teen-only dance party (no alcohol, just chaos) until 11.

My personal favorite family amenity is the kids' spa, open to ages 5–12, offering mini massages, facials, manis, pedis, and hair styling. My own daughter is tickled pink when resorts offer this, and while I’ve absolutely created a monster, the joy it brings is real.

The Spa and Wellness

Do not leave Grand Velas without spending serious time in the spa. I cannot stress this enough.

It's a Forbes Five-Star spa set across 90,000 square feet, and a meaningful portion of that space is dedicated to the signature water journey: a guided circuit through sauna, steam, an ice room, exfoliation, jacuzzi, cold plunge, and a "sensation pool." A staff member escorts you through each station with a stopwatch, which sounds a little militant but is actually essential. It's incredibly easy to get lost in this ritual and lose track of time. Allow 60-80 minutes for the experience.

I booked both a massage and a facial during my stay. Both were exceptional. This spa cannot be missed!

There are two fitness centers – one in Ambassador, and a massive fitness center in Zen. If staying fit while on vacation is your thing, you’ll be in heaven here. There are multiple fitness classes daily included in the all-inclusive package or you can go DIY and visit either well-equipped gym from 6 am – 10 pm daily.

This and That

If you’re looking for a resort with a kids water park with all the bells and whistles, late night partying, or a boisterous pool scene with music blasting, this is not your resort. There are two late night options – a karaoke bar and a cocktail bar – that are open until 2 am, but the vibe here is not PARTY. It’s relaxation.

If you’re looking to explore off the resort, there are several options. Many families enjoy the parks Xcaret and Xel Ha, you can visit Mayan ruins in Tulum or make the trek to Chichén Itzá, and there’s also a resident Cirque du Soleil show in the Riviera Maya.

This resort totals 539 suites; it’s set over an immense amount of acreage, so it never feels crowded but if you prefer a more boutique atmosphere, this is not the place for you.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

Avoid June through August. Sargassum season is no joke. The seaweed arrives in volume, and while the resort had a forklift working hard to keep up with removal, there's only so much you can do against nature. Ocean swimming would not be enjoyable, and the smell is . . . memorable. Travel outside this window, and you're golden.

Invest in lounge access at the Cancún airport before your departure flight. The departures terminal is aggressive. There are vendors everywhere, and the sales tactics are relentless. It's not the ideal way to close out a relaxing beach vacation. A lounge is well worth the cost for a peaceful send-off.

The good news on arrival: Cancún is impressively efficient. Passport control is automated; just scan your passport and go. I was through immigration and meeting my driver approximately ten minutes after landing.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya is in a category of its own among all-inclusives - on food, on family amenities, on wellness, and on sheer scale and quality. Reach out if you'd like help putting together a stay! I'd love to help you plan it.
